In 1964, with the support of Professor JimaoMeng, a specialty group on pediatric orthopedics was founded and then became one of the earliest department of pediatric orthopedics in China. Professor JiarongCui led this group to start the diagnosis and treatment of congenital malformations, trauma, bone disease and tumor in child&adolescent under the age of 14. Department of pediatric orthopedics ,of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, was officially established in the mid-eighty’s. After several generations of hard work and dedication, it had developed into the largest professional pediatric orthopedic departments in China. Currently it contains two wards, 87 beds included. In addition, we also provide expert outpatient services，VIP outpatient services, and 24-houremergency services. All those form a highly specialized departments with distinctive feature.
In the early 1960s, Dr. DongLiang, one of pediatric orthopedic surgeon, began to use Zahradnicek surgical methods to treat disease of Developmental Dysplasia Of the Hip. In 1965, Dr. JiarongCui introduced a new technology of hip osteotomy (Salter operation) to treat Developmental Dysplasia Of The Hip. From then on, various kinds of pediatric orthopedic surgeries carried out one after another. Especially after the 1980’s, the department was in the high-speed development period. The strategy of Developmental Dysplasia Of The Hip became systematization and normalization. The treatment of Congenital or Developmental Dysplasia Of The Hip reached the advanced international level by various harness in infants, closed reduction with limited plaster immobilization by stages, open reduction in different age of children, iliac osteotomy, proximal femoral shortening and rotational osteotomy and comprehensive surgery. Furthurmore, the surgical treatment and clinical research of the congenital club foot, the congenital high scapula, the congenital vertical talus, the congenital tibia pseudarthrosis are the first established in China by Pediatric Orthopedics Department, Beijing Jishuitan Hospital. It gathered abundant treatment experience. By that they published theses and promoted their experience and achievement to peers whom can reach the related knowledge . Meanwhile, diagnosis and treatment of hip myofascial contracture, deltoid contracture, external rotator contracture became generally standardized which were unknown before. It made the therapy more reasonable and professional. In pediatric traumatic, It was first carried out the operation of old humeral lateral condyle fracture and delayed Monteggia fracture in China. High selective posterior rhizotomy and extremity lengthening on children with cerebral palsy were earlier established in China. All these brought the sick children hope of learning and life improvement.
In 21 century, through a wide range of international learning and exchanging, with timely access to new knowledge and technique, the diagnosis and treatment level of our department are highly increased. In term of the minimally invasive treatment of fractures, elastic intramedullary needle treatment technique for children, interlocking intramedullary nailing technique for teenagers, closed reduction with percutaneous pin fixation technique for humeral condyle fracture have been widely used in clinical. It made the time of children's fracture treatment significantly shortened. Thus a significant reduction was in the incidence of complications and recess time of injured. And treatment satisfaction improved significantly. In the treatment of multiple trauma with large area stripped skin , skin grafting with injury skin and fracture internal fixation with debridgement simultaneously is always in the domestic leading position in China. We achieved excellent results in limb salvage treatment of malignant bone tumor in children, and accumulated valuable experience. Femoral epiphysis slippage in adolescent treated of internal fixation technology by aid of the computer navigation, bone bridge formed after the deformity caused by epiphyseal injuries removal technology and epiphysiolysis technology are the international leading level. The standardization and personalized developmental dislocation of the hip comprehensive treatment presented by our department has become the treatment guidelines of China. Early stage massage for congenital club foot, gypsum correcetive technology (Ponseti method) has been widely used in our department. Childhood arthroscopic treatment technology ,which used to treat articulatory fracture or lesion, has attained the domestic advanced level in China. Our department of children's early inclusive surgery of the epiphyseal ischemic necrosis of the femoral head has been widely recognized in the pediatric orthopedic.
