The hand surgery department of Beijing Ji Shui Tan Hospital offers 157 beds currently, with 43 doctors and 51 nurses. There are 12 chief physicians and 16 associate chief physicians, with 32 physicians on doctoral degree and 7 physicians on master degree. It has been awarded as the key clinical subject of Ministry of Health since 2012.

The hand surgery department was founded by academician Shu-huan Wang in 1958, who founded the first Chinese hand surgery and was called “the father of Chinese hand surgery”. In 1963, he successfully completed the world’s first severed finger replantation, which shocked the world. The hand surgery department is one of the several clinical centers in the world, which is famous for treatment of emergency hand injuries and function reconstruction.

The hand surgery department had a glorious history. The first model of rabbit era replantation was created here, with the world's first finger replantation in further. The world's first autogenous ectopic replantation of severed feet operation was successfully performed here, subsequently with completing 3 cases of ten fingers replantation surgery. Surgeons of the hand surgery department spearheaded rehabilitation system with hand orthosis in domestic and set up national hand surgery group. They created medical miracles again and again. More than 4000 hand surgeons were trained here, which was known as "the cradle and birthplace of Chinese hand surgery". Professor Jia-ning Wei, who won the five one national labor medal and the title of "people's good doctor", which is the highest honor in Chinese medical field, is an outstanding representative here.

Under the leadership of Shu-huan Wang, Xu-xi Cheng, Kei-fei Yang, Jia-ning Wei ,Guang-lei Tian and Shan-lin Chen, many fields, such as treatment of emergency hand injuries, hand function reconstruction, peripheral nerve injury, wrist joint injury and disease, hand congenital deformities, hand tumor and so on, ranks in the leading domestic level for more than 60 years.

Now skin scar and defect in upper and lower extremities can be repaired in the hand surgery with use of all kinds of techniques, such as skin grafting, skin flap, composite tissue flap and so on. Hand tendon rupture and tendon adhesion also can be repaired here. So many diseases can be treated here, including brachial plexus injury, nerve injury repair in upper extremity, nerve injury repair of sciatic nerve, tibial nerve and common peroneal, with neurolysis, nerve anastomosis and nerve grafting, function reconstruction of various dysfunction caused by irreversible nerve injury, as well as vascular injury repair beyond the axillary artery in upper extremity and the popliteal artery in lower extremity, with vascular anastomosis, vascular transplantation, bone injury in upper extremity, wrist fracture and carpal instability, various metacarpal fractures. Surgeons here can perform precise fixation with advanced micro implant and artificial joint replacement, as well as severed finger and limb replantation and thumb reconstruction project, hand burn and late function reconstruction, late function reconstruction of complex hand injury, and correction of hand congenital deformities. Treatment of a variety of diseases, such as tumor, bone and soft tissue disorders and hand rehabilitation therapy are in the leading level in domestic and foreign.

There are about 400 cases of correction of congenital deformities in upper extremity performed in hand surgery department of Beijing Ji Shui Tan Hospital every year, including syndactylia, polydactylism, arthrogryposis multiplex congenital, congenital thumb aplasia, congenital constricting band syndrome, split hand malformation and so on, which are common. Surgeons are experienced in treatment of some rare deformities especially, such as macromelia and megalodactylia, congenital absence and hypoplasia of radius, Poland's syndrome, mirror hand deformity, Madelung's deformity, Apert syndrome, Ollier's disease and so on.

Hand surgery has won more than 90 national, municipal and bureau honorary titles. It won four awards of the National Science Conference, 4 awards of the second prize and 8 awards of the third prize of Beijing Science& Technology Development and 2 awards of patented technology. More than 400 papers were published in domestic and more than 30 in foreign. More than 50 monographs are completed as editor-in-chief or editor. There are 1 person of "Hundred Thousand Miriade Talents Project" and 2 persons at the Ten level and 5 persons at the Hundred level of municipal "Ten Hundred Thousand Talent Project". Currently, there are 2 doctoral tutors and 4 master's tutors. 3 persons served as the chairman and 4 persons served as the vice chairman of chapter of Chinese Medical Association in recent 3 years. 1 person served as associate editor and 9 persons served as editorial board member of journals of Chinese Medical Association.

A number of surgeons has been sent to study abroad in recent years. They won the honorary titles of “Beijing Science and technology new star” and “Talents of Beijing municipal Party Committee Organization Department” and Capital Medical Development Research Fund.
